Strange Cargo
Strange Cargo was established in Folkestone in 1995 and operates as a company limited by guarantee and registered charity.
Our main aim is to create excellent art through public participation. By this we mean that we involve the public in the creation of our work. This differs from community art, which also works with people/communities, but which sometimes values the taking part over the quality and artistic value of the end result. Participatory art for Strange Cargo involves people, but is always artist led and delivers high end, exemplary end results. For example our artworks, Like the Back of my Hand at Folkestone Central Station was a Millennium project involving 101 local people born in separate years of the last century, whose hands were cast into bronze and whose stories can be read on a digital screen in the ticket office. This work, which greets visitors arriving in Folkestone has graced the station approach for 10 years, is loved by the community and has never been vandalised, because it means something to the people who live there.
Strange Cargo’s work was initially focused on celebratory outdoor arts projects and carnival, which has led to us developing the skills necessary to deliver a portfolio of work that involves whole town buy-in, and a significant reputation for imaginative public art projects, special celebratory events such as Charivari Day carnival, all involving large groups of people. Consistently we are committed to producing, developing and delivering high-quality participatory arts projects, particularly focusing on creating public artworks for the places where people live and work.
